The last couple of years have been very fortunate for South Africa. There was the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted extremely well, with a total of nine cities hosting matches throughout the country, with the final hosted in the largest city Johannesburg in the impressive Soccer City Stadium. Then there were all the rumours that Cape Town is being considered as the host for the Grand Prix, possibly 2012; and there have been hints that there are plans for a new track underway.

On top of all this, on the 3rd of October, and lasting until the 7th, Cape Town was host to the International Astronautical Conference (IAC). For those who don't know Astronautics (and Astronautical Engineering) is the study of navigation in space, or space flight. Among those who attended this congress were representatives from the biggest space agencies in the world, along with academic researchers, executives from the industry, students and professionals.

This all coincides with two important events: first, it is World Space Week; and second, it is the 60th anniversary of this conference. The International Astronautical Conference (IAC) is organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), and constitutes the largest conference in this subject area in the world.

The conference usually involves the gathering of the world leaders in anything to do with space for a series of lectures, sessions, exhibitions and the discussion of submitted scientific papers, of which there are over 1,000 articles per year. Also in attendance this year were members of parliament there to discuss how space technology can affect issues like the environment. This year was also special due to the attendance of NASA.

The event took place in the Town International Convention Centre, and went off without a hitch. This has been a great couple of years for South Africa, and now the country is able to lay claim to hosting the 60th anniversary of the world's biggest space conference.
