When you learn piano by ear, it's not something you pick up with a snap of a finger. You've surely heard about piano prodigies who've been gifted with playing skills from conception. However, your musical expertise can certainly come from more than just your musical DNA.

Check out these 3 great tips on how to learn piano by ear:

1. Learning music theory isn't required, but it does give you an edge. You can learn to play instruments with great ease if you have a good background in music definitions and theory. You can always wing it, for sure, but think of yourself as going to war with all the necessary artillery. Wouldn't it be better to prevail over any kind of obstacle in that manner? It's definitely better to learn any instrument when you're aware of music principles, scales, and progressions.

It would definitely be much easier to learn piano by ear when you know exactly what you're dealing with. Memorizing the music can lead to similar results, but playing in the future can be more effortless if you're armed with some technical knowledge as well.

2. Understand the 3 main elements of music. You can be a great piano player, but not knowing what melody, harmony, and rhythm are could set you back. You can learn piano by ear easier that way. Before we go on, let's go through their definitions real quick:

Melody - This is also referred to as the "tune" of a musical piece. You can get a song's melody by humming or singing along to the tune. You'll find that your voice goes up and down together with the scales. Keep at it and you'll be able to memorize the tune with ease. Once it's in your head, it would be much easier to play.

Harmony - The ability to play and balance multiple chords or notes is considered as harmony. You can learn to play piano more naturally as soon as you are able to tell if the notes are in harmony. Certain notes or chords work very well with others. Harmony simply means understanding which ones go well with each other.

Rhythm - Rhythm can certainly exist in music without harmony or melody. This basically refers to the beat or timing. You can easily tap on the door and create basic beats. Speed can also go either way. That's how you get rhythm.

3. Even veteran musicians practice a lot. Practice makes perfect, that fact can't be said enough. Playing a song over and over again will only help you become more familiar with it. Aside from playing with just your hands, it helps to play with your heart as well. You'll find it easier to memorize songs when you do.

These are your 3 guidelines for effortless and smooth piano playing. Learn piano by ear with great ease just by keeping these in mind.
