While baths and showers being plumbed into modern bathrooms has undoubtedly improved the quality of life for most in the last few decades, they also come with a number of potential problems that have to be sorted. These problems can include a leaking shower. There can be many reasons why this happens and there are a variety of options for fixing the issues.

Showering is a very popular way to keep clean nowadays. In the past it was not an option and less frequent baths were normal for most people. Before indoor plumbing a tin bath would be filled in front of the fire and the whole family would take turns in the water. Modern plumbing has made it much easier to keep clean.

In more recent years it has become more popular to stand under a spray of water that washes away the dirt rather than sitting in a tub and the bather sitting in the dirt. Showers can be fitted in a number of ways using water from existing taps over the bath or using electric power. It is also popular in larger homes to have separate cubicles in addition to a bath. Showering is preferable for most as it uses less water, therefore reducing the cost of bathing.

If you have a cubicle and you notice that the floor or walls around it are starting to smell or rot it could mean that you have a problem with your waterproofing that is causing a leak. There are a number of reasons why this could happen. Most commonly there will be a problem with the grouting, where the sealant is not strong enough and causes a gap between the shower and the wall.

Just as with normal taps it is common for the washers to wear out periodically. In this appliance this can manifest as a leak from the showering head. To fix, simply unscrew the head, remove the worn washer and replace with a new one which you can purchase cheaply from a hardware store. For peace of mind you could also use sealing tape.

In the same way as a washer the actual hose that connects the water source to the head can become worn and leak. You could try to repair it with tape but it is probably easier to just replace the hose. If the electric box on the wall is dripping call an electrically qualified plumber immediately and do not attempt to touch it yourself.

Some leaking shower problems are easy and cheap to repair yourself. Others, particularly those involving electrics should only be handled by a qualified professional. If you are in any doubt about any of your work call a plumber for advice.
