The Spanish island of Menorca, one of the Balearics, gets its name by being compared to its neighbour Majorca. Because it is an island in Spain it offers a spectacular climate with plenty of rich history and culture; and what's more there are plenty of cheap package holidays to get you over there. But why is Menorca a particularly popular destination for British tourists? What follows is a brief look at why that is.

One reason why is certainly that the culture on this island is incredibly easy to get involved in. Between May and October the island is host to many festivals and celebrations, some that have been going on for centuries, which rejoice in the history and culture of the island. It is between these months that most people visit this island, but unlike many other Spanish islands, then numbers never get too much o handle, so holidays are relaxing whatever time of year.

One of the most popular festivals is the Festes de la Mare de Du de Graciam, on the 23rd of June in Ciutadella. The first day consists of everyone (tourists and locals alike) gathering round to watch marchers and dancers and people on horseback march up and down the streets in celebration. Then on that very evening people begin a huge pretend war where they hurl hazel nuts at each other in the street. It is a rare and fantastic display of pride in culture.

The fascinating history of this island must be another reason so many British tourists love it. It reaches right back to ancient times, for there can be found on the island megalithic stone monuments. And the history of the island is also tied up in British history by the fact that Britain took control of the island for nearly a century, and there are many influences that show this, including architectural.

This list should make clear that Menorca offers a huge amount to tourists from Britain. It has all the bits of other Spanish tourist destinations that make them so popular, including the climate and culture, but offers unique opportunities to take part in the culture, as well as see evidence of ancient history, and history that is tied up with the history of Britain.
