For many people a compound bow seems to be just like any other bow. However, this is not the case. In fact, one has to note that the compound bow has various advantages when compared to other types of bows. This is mainly attributed to its design and the materials that are used to manufacture it. Furthermore metal arrows are used rather than wooden ones. This helps to achieve a bigger firepower. We shall be discussing how a compound bow works in further detail hereunder, so as to be able to understand how it is more beneficial when compared to other bows.

As with all other bows basically once you pull the string back, the energy applied is retained in the limbs. The limbs of such a bow are composed of two materials, and this is why it is named compound bow. These are made in such a way that higher pressure is retained.

Obviously, the limbs have to be made from very resistant materials to be able to retain such a high pressure. If not they would end up bending and losing their original shape. When the archer lets go of the string, this will move back to its original position. The stored energy resulting from the tension converts itself into kinetic energy, which in turn gets transferred to the arrow once it gets released. Many compound bows also have a pulley which helps to gain higher power.

When an archer uses this type of bow he does not have to maintain it in that tense position for too long. A relatively smaller force needs to be applied. This is one of the benefits of this kind of bow.

In fact one has to appreciate the fact that in essence, the force that is applied is reduced rather than the other way round. The draw length, that is the length from the original position to the drawn spot is shorter, thus a smaller tension is required. As a result a much steadier and more accurate shot can be achieved. Needless to say the bigger the energy stored in the bow, the faster it will travel once the tension is released.

Having said that this type of bow also has a few disadvantages. A main one is that since it is made up of a number of parts, it goes without saying that one needs to pay special attention to check it and maintain it regularly. Regular servicing is required. This includes checking the strings, checking cables, calibrating it, and applying grease to axles.

However, this type of bow is much more beneficial and easy to use when compared with other types. That is why many archers are using it because it is reliable, trustworthy and durable.
