I came across an essay regarding social conscience not long ago. The article got me thinking about ways we could potentially see a positive change in the direction of world events. NXIVM's Keith Raniere seems to suggest that without the development of a social conscience, humans won't be spurred into action to solve the ills of society.
Almost all people possess a conscience, or the inner voice that gives them the ability to differentiate between wrong and right. The way I see it, a social conscience is the overall collective views that a culture has about what is right or wrong. Right and wrong can be subjective, but most societies have norms that their citizens live within.
The problems of our modern world stem from a deficient social consciousness. Because we tend to think of each other in practical terms, we take each other for granted a lot of the time, and do not care much about how our actions affect others. In order to avert negative effects upon modern society, cultivating a social conscience is essential.
What are ways that we can go about doing that? If we look back to things that might create a sense of conscience within a person, we can usually agree that a person's influences and sense of self play an important role. Development in social consciousness in communities can be brought about by helping leaders and parents to instill good individual ethics and morals in our children and each other. Methods of how good ethics and morals are created are explored by organizations such as NXIVM or Executive Success Programs, to help one understand one's own ethics and how to best act that out in the world.
There are other resources, like programs that assist people build self-esteem. Children will benefit greatly from such programs that help them in self-discovery. Corporations that practice good ethics should be given devotion as well. Think about companies in your area that promote good business ethics and that have a positive impact on your community. Might it be that if leaders, parents, and business organizations are given more assistance that we will be able to increase social conscience awareness? By taking action-whether it be through funding helpful programs or simply promoting ethics in our homes- we can improve social consciousness.
